MIAMI 17, KENT 10

Prentice closes in on 3 NCAA scoring records

KENT, Ohio — Travis Prentice rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown, moving him closer to three NCAA records held by Ricky Williams, as Miami University beat Kent 17-10 Saturday.

Prentice, who had 43 carries, scored his 67th career rushing TD on a 1-yard run in the first quarter, leaving him five away from the record of 72 set by last year's Heisman Trophy winner at Texas.

HEISMAN WATCH
  • Travis Prentice, RB, Miami, 43 carries, 149 yards, 1 TD.
  • Shaun Alexander, RB, Alabama, 36 carries, 214 yards, 3 TDs.
  • Ron Dayne, RB, Wisconsin, 17 carries, 167 yards, 2 TDs.
  • Drew Brees, QB, Purdue, 40-of-57, 509 yards, 5 TDs.
  • Peter Warrick, WR, Florida State, Suspended for second straight week.
  • Joe Hamilton, QB, Georgia Tech, 24-of-34, 324 yards, 1 TD; 18 carries, 59 yards.
Prentice has 432 career points, second only to Williams' 452. Also: Prentice's 72nd career touchdown leaves him three from Williams' NCAA career total TDs of 75.

        Prentice's 1-yard run gave Miami (5-2, 4-1 Mid-American Conference) a 7-0 lead with 4:30 left in the first.

Miami increased its lead to 10-3 on Andy Brumbergs' 42-yard field goal in the third.

Prentice could have moved even closer to Williams' three NCAA records, but was stopped by Kent on fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line.

But Miami made it 17-3 on Trevor Gaylor's 34-yard TD catch from Mike Bath with 4:50 remaining.

Jose Davis hit Kelly Jurron from 9 yards out as Kent (1-6, 1-3) closed to 17-10 with 1:27 left, but Miami recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.

“We escaped with a victory today,” Miami coach Terry Hoeppner said. “It was the most distracting week of practice in all my years at Miami.”

The grandmothers of Bath and Ryan Terry died, and they missed most of practice.

Bath was 9-for-24 passing for 132 yards, with one inter cepton and one touchdown. Prentice rushed for 149 yards, but on 43 carries, for less-than-impressive 3.5 yards per carry.

Last week, Prentice's NCAA record of carries without a fumble ended at 863 at Bowling Green. Prentice has four games left to break Williams' NCAA marks.

Nick Monk (Franklin), Miami's two-way linebacker/H-back, did not play because of a knee sprain.

“We had to replace Nick with two guys,” Hoeppner said.

“Our defense played well, in particular (defensive tackle) Andy Aracri, who leads the league in tackles for loss,” Hoeppner added.

After their goal-line stand, Kent drove for what appeared to be the tying score, until Miami linebacker Dustin Cohen (Summit Country Day) forced a fumble that James Braucher recovered for Miami.

The RedHawks have a week off before playing host to the Cincinnati Bearcats Oct. 30 at Yager Stadium. At stake is possession of the Victory Bell, which Miami won back last year.
