Poll makes it official: No. 1 Elder vs. No. 2 St. X

BY DAVE SCHUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

This is what high school football is all about: Two undefeated teams, Elder (No.1) and St. Xavier (No.2), playing before an anticipated record crowd 7:30p.m. Friday at St.X, with more than just No.1 in The Cincinnati Enquirer's coaches poll at stake.

For the fifth consecutive week, Elder and St. Xavier remained first and second in the DivisionI football poll.

Besides the poll title, the winner will emerge as the Greater Catholic League South champion while virtually locking up a playoff berth and home-field advantage for a first-round playoff game.

“This is probably the biggest game St. Xavier has been in this late in the season,” St.X coach Steve Rasso said. “There's no doubt it's the game of the decade for us.”

The top three teams in DivisionII-IV remained unchanged with Wyoming holding a 22-point lead over Edgewood with McNicholas (6-1) still third after defeating Purcell Marian 28-7.

Four teams in the DivisionII-VI poll are undefeated (Wyoming, Edgewood, Batavia and Cincinnati Country Day) with five others at 6-1.

Elder and St.X are the only undefeated Division I teams with seven others at 5-2.
