Manitoba 4, Cyclones 2

Winless club has 5-game trip next

BY JOHN P. WISE

Maybe the upcoming five-game road trip will do the Cyclones some good.

In Wednesday night's finale of a four-game, season-opening homestand, Cincinnati dropped another one, this time at the hooves of the Manitoba Moose, 4-2 in the Firstar Center.

“We had a few lucky bounces go our way and capitalized on some good opportunities,” Manitoba coach Randy Carlyle said.

Manitoba (3-1-1) broke a 1-1 tie and stretched its lead to 3-1 late in the second period. Mike Prokopec passed to an unmarked Bill Bowler just to the right of the goal. Bowler beat new Cyclones goalie Mark Fitzpatrick at 17:39 to give the Moose the lead they'd never lose.

Eighty-four seconds later, Vladislav Serov skated in alone and gave the visitors their two-goal advantage with his first professional goal.

“They had a fast team, and they created a lot of offensive chances,” said Fitzpatrick, who made his first start Wednesday.

Both teams were aggressive in that middle period. Cincinnati's David Karpa earned a pair of five-minute majors for fighting. Between intermissions, 11 penalties were called, for a total of 38 minutes.

Despite all the power-play chances, the Cyclones failed to score on any of them. They were 0-for-7 Wednesday, bringing their total through four games to an abys mal 1-for-30, worst in the IHL.

“I thought we had good chances,” Cyclones coach Ron Smith said. “I was pleased we didn't get frustrated with it. We just kept plugging away at it. But it was the difference again tonight.”
