Bellevue climbs to No. 1 in Class A

BY NEIL SCHMIDT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Beating Beechwood impresses even the pickiest pollsters. And so Bellevue has vaulted to the top of the Associated Press Class A state rankings for the first time in eight years.

ENQUIRER POLL
Highlands and Dixie Heights remained one-two in The Kentucky Enquirer's football poll, setting the stage for Friday's battle at Dixie Heights.
Bellevue's victory over Beechwood catapulted the Tigers into the No. 3 spot.
  1.   Highlands (11) ....... 6-1  119
  2.   Dixie Heights ....... 6-1  105
  3.   Bellevue (1) ....... 7-0   93
  4.   Newport ....... 6-1   82
  5.   Beechwood ....... 5-2   62
  6.   Holmes ....... 6-1   56
  7.   Ryle ....... 4-3   53
  8.   Conner ....... 3-3   36
  9.   Boone County ....... 3-4   32
10.   Cov, Catholic ....... 1-5   13
Others receiving votes: Simon Kenton 2, Ludlow 2, Campbell County 1.
Bellevue (7-0) is tied with Campbellsville (8-0) for the top spot in the rankings, having moved up from fourth place last week. Campbellsville ranked second last week behind Beechwood.

        Beechwood dropped to fourth.

“It's an honor when people around the state give you that much respect,” Bellevue coach Charlie Coleman said. “It probably says a lot for Beechwood's program, too, that we made that much of a jump.

“We're glad to be there. But we'll temper that knowing what's ahead of us. Whoever wins the state championship will have to beat Beechwood (in the playoffs) to do that.”

Bellevue, which reached the state finals in 1990, was last No.1 during preseason balloting in '91. But it went 7-5 that year and hadn't had a winning season since.
