Mason Co. 41, Newport 26

Upset ends Wildcats' hopes for an undefeated year

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Newport's dream of an unbeaten football season crashed in surprising fashion Friday night in Maysville. District rival Mason County sprung a series of big plays to stun the Wildcats 41-26.

Newport had entered 6-0, hoping to finish the regular season undefeated for the first time since it went 11-0 in 1980. Its No.4 Class AA state ranking is its best since that year, when it ended the season atop the state's AAA poll.

Newport, also ranked No.2 in the Enquirer's coaches poll, allowed four touchdown plays or 20 or more yards. The Wildcats saw a 12-7 second-quarter lead vanish but were still in the game, trailing just 28-26, before the Royals added two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Charlie Smith led Newport with touchdown runs of 19 and 6 yards.
