Eli Lilly rises as legislation discussed

Eli Lilly & Co. gained $2.75, or about 3.9 percent, on Friday to close at $73.46.

The Indianapolis pharmaceutical company rose with other drugmakers as U.S. lawmakers consider a plan to give consumers new rights to sue their health plans under state medical malpractice laws, analysts said.

The U.S. House of Representatives Thursday passed HMO-patient protection legislation that could help consumers demand more prescription-drug coverage from insurers. Such legislation could help ease restrictions on drug choices in managed-care plans.
