Winn-Dixie Stores shares fall $3

        Shares of Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. fell $3, or about 9.5 percent, to $28.75 Thursday. Stock in the company, which owns Thriftway supermarkets, traded as low as $28.561/4 on volume of 577,700 shares. The 13-week average daily trading volume is 194,249 shares.

        The food retailer reported earnings of 15 cents a share for the quarter ended Sept. 22, missing expectations of 23 cents according to six analysts polled by First Call Corp.

        The company also said it would repurchase up to 5 million shares of its stock.
