Griffey, A-Rod offers top $250M
No response to Seattle's latest proposals
Enquirer news service
SEATTLE With several Seattle Mariner executives planning to travel to Florida to visit with Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. in the offseason, those may not be the meetings that decide the contract situations of the two Seattle stars.
Sources told the Seattle Times that the ballclub has more than a quarter of a billion dollars on the table to Rodriguez and Griffey. The actual split is not certain, possibly about $135 million for eight years to Griffey, about $125 million for eight years to Rodriguez.
But the meeting that may do more to settle their respective contract extensions, and whether they'd sign them, might come in the next few weeks when Griffey drives downstate from his Orlando home to Miami to buy dinner for Rodriguez and watch an NFL game.
Griffey said they don't intend to talk about their contracts, then added, But you know how that goes.
According to sources, the Mariners suggested a breakdown of amounts by year and a signing bonus but left the final say up to Griffey.
Their offer to Rodriguez also contains a massive signing bonus, $15 million to $18 million.
