Elder golfers win West sectional
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The off-and-on Elder boys golf team was on Wednesday in the Cincinnati West sectional tournament at Miami Whitewater.
Led by Brian McCarren and Scott Weeks, both with 77s, the Panthers shot a 311 to capture the sectional championship for the third consecutive season.
Oak Hills took the runner-up trophy with a 313. LaSalle (318) was third, Fairfield (321) fourth.
Brian (Hartoin) and Steve (Montgomery) carried the team all season, Elder coach Mike Trimpe said. But the other guys (McCarren and Weeks) showed signs of coming on the last two weeks.
Although five golfers play for each team, only the four best scores are combined for the team score.
Brian (Hartoin) bogeyed seven, eight and nine and finished the front nine with a 40, Trimpe said. He walked off the ninth green with his head down until I told him three guys broke 40 on the front nine.
The strategy that coach Randy Owen preached to the Highlanders was simple.
Our goal was not to beat ourselves, and by that I mean no double bogeys, Owen said. If someone shoots better and beats us, I could accept it.
Joe Morris, who won Oak Hills' final starting position in an intrasquad playoff, tied Highlanders teammate Ross Goodson and Winton Woods senior Kevin Hall for medalist honors with a 76.
Ross has been our No.1 player, Owen said. He's one of the captains, and as hard as he's worked, today's score wasn't a surprise to me.'
The Cincinnati East sectional tournament will be today at Glenview. The top four teams advance to next week's regional Thursday at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown.
