Purcell-Marian breaks soccer drought
CINCINNATI HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
Four years of frustration came to an abrupt end for Purcell Marian seniors Brian Allen, Randy Schneeman and Aaron Korte.
This trio had reason to celebrate Saturday after the Cavaliers (4-5-1 overall) defeated Roger Bacon 2-0 in a Greater Catholic League North Division boys soccer game.
This was our first GCL victory in five years, coach Lou Rosati said. We also haven't won four games since 1992 and these guys were tired of losing.
Allen scored the game-winner 10 minutes into the game on a breakaway. Anthony Rosati scored an insurance goal in the second half.
Princeton striker Mike Cassady scored a school single-game record seven goals in a 10-1 victory over Lemon Monroe.
After sitting out 11 weeks with a broken foot, Mike Cassady has scored 11 goals and added five assists.
GIRLS SOCCER: Less than five hours after earning the No.1 and No.2 seeds in the sectional tournament, Lakota West and St. Ursula struggled to ties.
Goals by Amy Mink and Rebecca Hamilton enabled Lakota West to salvage a 2-2 tie with Mason while St. Ursula fought Thomas Worthington to a scoreless tie.
We never got into a flow, St. Ursula coach Steve Dorr said.
CROSS COUNTRY: As the sectional meets draw closer, the defending Division I state champion St. Xavier team continues to improve.
Andy Weitmarschen's third-place finish in 15:54 paced the Bombers to the championship of the St. Xavier Invitational. Clayton Northmont was second.
Bishop Brossart runners took second, third, fourth and fifth to easily win the Division I title at St. Xavier.
Lakota East's Lindsey Zinn set a course record of 18:14 to win the big school division of the girls meet at St. Xavier while St. Henry captured the small school division.
