Buckeyes' injuries add to insult of loss

BY SCOTT MacGREGOR
The Cincinnati Enquirer

COLUMBUS — Injuries hit the Ohio State Buckeyes almost as hard as Wisconsin did in Saturday's 42-17 loss. About a half dozen Bucks were helped off the field.

The biggest blow was the broken right leg suffered by true freshman middle linebacker Freddie Pagac, son of defensive coordinator Fred Pagac. Junior was scheduled to have surgery Saturday night and is likely out the rest of the season.

Pagac, a backup, was playing because starter Jason Ott, a sophomore from Elder High, had to leave in the third quarter with a groin bruise and a neck strain. Ott returned after Pagac's injury.

Pagac had not played much this year, but there were high hopes for the favorite son. On Pagac's first play Saturday, he made a key tackle to stop Wisconsin on third down, making the Badgers settle for a field goal.

Senior fullback Matt Keller (Moeller High) reaggrivated his ankle sprain on Ohio State's first scoring drive and did not return.

“We lost front-line players, but that is not an excuse,” OSU coach John Cooper said.

CONFIDENCE GAME: Cooper insisted he's not down on tailback Michael Wiley, who gained just 36 yards on nine carries, fumbled twice (one blowing an OSU touchdown and the other handing Wisconsin one) and played sparingly in the second half. Freshman Jonathan Wells got the carries instead.

“I'm worried about Mike Wiley fumbling the football, but I'm not going to give up on Michael Wiley,” Cooper said. “Michael's done too many good things around here for me to give up on him right now. I told him after the game, "There's a lot of football to be played.”
