Yard sale to help Taiwan quake victims

        A yard sale to benefit earthquake victims in Taiwan will be held this weekend at the Market Place parking lot, 8502 Market Place Lane, off Montgomery Road in Montgomery. The times are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

        The Taiwanese Association of Cincinnati has raised $10,000 for relief.

        The death toll from Tuesday's earthquake and aftershocks, including one early Sunday, is 2,056, with 8,667 people injured, according to the Disaster Management Center.

        Taipei Hsien, one of Cincinnati's seven sister cities, had severe damage. Donations are tax-deductible. Contributions to the relief effort can be made to: TAC/Taiwan Earthquake Relief Fund, 10923 Brookgreen Court, Cincinnati 45242. For information, call 336-8067.

Enquirer's Amrhein named best reporter
        Cincinnati Enquirer reporter Saundra Amrhein was named Best Reporter in Ohio on Saturday by the Society of Professional Journalists.

        Ms. Amrhein, 28, tied with David Giffels of the Akron Beacon Journal. She won based on six stories that included coverage of local efforts to aid victims of Hurricane Mitch in Honduras.

        Ms. Amrhein joined the Enquirer in April 1998. She has worked for Florida Today in Melbourne, Fla. Ms. Amrhein covers Warren County government for the Enquirer's Tricounty Bureau.

        Other Enquirer winners:

        • Owen Findsen was named Best Critic in Ohio. Mr. Findsen, who covers visual art, tied with Frank Gabrenya of the Columbus Dispatch.

        • Columbus bureau reporters Sandy Theis and Michael Hawthorne won Best Deadline Reporting for an article, “Governor Accused in Payoff Scheme.”

        • Deputy editorial page editor Linda Cagnetti won second place in education coverage for “Rating the School Levies.”

        • Jackie Demaline won first place in arts reporting for “Arts & Community: A 12-part Series.

        • James Jackson, Greg Noble, James Bottorff and Jeff Tindall won second place in the Best Web site category for www.Cincinnati.com.

Farm field accident kills 19-month-old
        Chad Meyer, an Oldenburg, Ind., toddler, died at Children's Hospital Medical Center after being struck by a combine.

        Franklin County deputies said Sunday that the driver was Chad's uncle, Theodore Meyer, 17, of North County Road in Greensburg.

        Mr. Meyer was unaware that 19-month-old Chad was in the field and the death was accidental, deputies said.

        The boy was playing in the field Friday afternoon with his brother, who was not injured.

        Chad was taken to Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville on Friday afternoon and taken by helicopter to Children's, where he was pronounced dead at 7:21 p.m.

Man arrested after fight with neighbor
        A 72-year-old Corryville man was charged with aggravated menacing Sunday morning after a parking dispute with a neighbor, Cincinnati police said.

        Charles Blythe Sr. of the 3200 block of Glendora Street is accused of pointing a shotgun at a neighbor across the street at 2:22 a.m.

        Mr. Blythe admitted swinging a metal hoe at one of the persons involved, according to the arrest report. He told police he had several firearms in his home but refused to let officers search it, police said.

Man tried to steal register, police say
        READING — A Forest Park man was charged with attempted robbery after police said he tried to steal the cash register from a gas station.

        Fabian Lyles, 40, of the 400 block of Dew Drop Circle, entered the Stall Shell station, 9203 Reading Road, at 9:09 a.m. Saturday and used force against an employee during the attempted robbery, Reading police said.

        He was arrested in Springfield Township at 4 p.m. Saturday and gave police a written confession, according to his arrest report.

Ohio charts reduction in job-related deaths
        About 7 percent fewer Ohio workers died on the job in 1998 than the year before, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

        The report states that 186 workers died on the job in 1998 compared to 201 in 1997. As in past years, the No. 1 cause of work-related death was car or truck wrecks, accounting for 86 deaths.

        • Homicides, primarily victims of armed robberies, dropped from 22 deaths to 14, accounting for nearly 8 percent of job-related deaths.

        • Women accounted for 12 percent of job deaths in 1998.

        • Electrocutions dropped from eight deaths to four.

Nun to compete in benefit run/walk
        Calling all joggers who think they can beat “The Running Nun.”

        The third annual Tyler's 5K Walk/Run will take place 9 a.m. Oct. 9 at Miami Whitewater Park in Harrison.

        The event has raised $32,000 to to fight Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), making it the biggest SIDS fund-raising event in the Tristate.

        Tyler Frey, son of Kelly and Mark Frey, of Groesbeck, was 2 months old when he died of SIDS in 1997. SIDS is the No. 1 killer of infants.

        Proceeds will benefit research and support groups at the SIDS Alliance of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky

        “The Running Nun,” Sister Madonna Buder, 69, of Spokane, Wash., will test her endurance in the duathalon event, running a 10K and biking a 30K.

Tall Stacks ticket free with bus pass
        People who buy an October MetroCard monthly bus pass will get a bonus: a ticket to Tall Stacks '99.

        Now through Oct. 10, Metro will give away a single-day general admission ticket, a $5 value, with the bus pass. Tall Stacks '99 runs Oct. 13-17 and will feature 19 riverboats from 14 cities.

        MetroCards are available at the BusStop sales office at 120 E. Fourth St.

Tobacco grower Vesper on advisory panel
        CLEVELAND — Rose Vesper, a state legislator from New Richmond, is among the tobacco farmers concerned about this week's Tobacco Settlement Task Force vote about spending Ohio's $10.1 billion share.

        “This is their livelihood and has been for a very long time,” said the Republican, who is eligible for some of the money.

        She is part of the 15-member committee that will recommend on Wednesday how the state should spend its share.

        The task force is suggesting that $5.7 billion be spent on school buildings and technology, $2.3 billion on public health, $1.8 billion on biomedical research and $25 million for a special law enforcement fund. The committee has proposed spending the remaining $229 million to help the state's tobacco-producing counties.
