Colerain girls run 4th in cross-country nationals

The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Colerain girls cross country team's quest for a national championship came up short.

The Cardinals, competing in the Great American Cross Country Race in Charlotte, N.C., against a 20-team field, finished fourth behind Bingham, Utah; Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Kingswood, Texas.

Senior Alison Zeinner finished fourth, running the 3.1 miles at McAlpin-Greenway Park in a school-record and personal-best time of 17:47.

“Alison finally burst on to the national scene,” Colerain coach Ron Russo said. “She beat Danielle Coon (Saratoga Springs), one of the top distance runners in the nation. It was a coming-out race for Alison.”

Colerain senior Mason Ward finished third in the boys race, covering the distance in 15.15.

GIRLS TENNIS: Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy improved to 17-0 with victories over Ursuline and Upper Arlington Saturday at CHCA.

Defending Division II state singles champion Audra Falk and Laura Leutzinger also both improved to 17-0 with impressive victories.

“Upper Arlington won the Division I state team championship last year and we won the Division II team championship,” CHCA coach Lynn McNally said. “They beat us 3-2 last year.”

GIRLS SOCCER: Two goals by Kristina Wilson and one by Laurel Chalk rallied Glen Este to a 4-2 victory over Kings at Kings.

The Knights led 1-0 at halftime and 2-1 with less than 30 minutes remaining in the second half, but Glen Este took charge to win its sixth game in seven outings.

        • Roger Bacon, the No. 1 team in the Cincinnati Enquirer's Division II poll, battled No. 2 Summit Country Day to a scoreless tie at Summit.

BOYS SOCCER: A penalty-kick goal by B.J. Norris with two minutes remaining lifted Loveland to its ninth consecutive victory, 1-0 over Anderson

        • It was a tough eight days for the previously undefeated Lakota West boys soccer team.

After losing to Centerville (3-0) and Colerain (3-2), the Thunderhawks suffered a third consecutive loss, 2-1 to Turpin Saturday at the Forest Hills Soccer Stadium. Sean Weber and Wes Ernst scored for the Spartans, now 7-2 on the season.
