Colerain moves up spot in Division I

Wyoming, McNicholas tops in II-VI

BY DAVE SCHUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Colerain inched closer to the top of The Cincinnati Enquirer's Division I football coaches poll, replacing Moeller at No.3 behind Elder and St. Xavier.

Elder (4-0), St. X (3-0) and Colerain (4-0) are all undefeated. Moeller is 2-2.

There's a tie for the No.1 position in the Divisions II-III-IV-V-VI poll with unde feated Wyoming and McNicholas sharing the honor.

In the first Southeastern Indiana Top Five poll, Franklin County was the unanimous choice for No.1 followed by East Central.

Colerain coach Kerry Coombs, whose Cardinals finished No.1 in the 1998 poll, is happy with the ranking, but dissatisfied with his offense.

“We're flattered to be ranked anywhere in the poll,” Coombs said. “We're on target to make the playoffs, but we must play better the next three weeks.”

Plagued by turnovers the first 31/2 games, Coombs made a quarterback change Friday at halftime, moving senior Kyle Funk into the starting position.

“We made the change because the offense had four turnovers the previous week against Milford and four during the first half last week (against Middletown),” Coombs said.

Colerain has won 15 consecutive regular-season games, the longest by a Cincinnati-area Division I team.

Wyoming, second last week, and McNicholas, third, moved up thanks to their victories and former No.1 Badin's 26-13 loss to Purcell Marian.

Six of the top 10 teams in the Division II-III-IV-V-VI poll are undefeated, including Edgewood (4), Cincinnati Country Day (8), Batavia (9) and Madeira (10).

Ranked No.16 with two points last week, Edgewood made the biggest move to No. 4 (55 points and one first-place vote). Batavia climbed from No.15 to ninth.
