N.KY. HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS

Volleyball tourney to take place at Ryle

The Cincinnati Enquirer

This year's Kentucky state volleyball tournament has been moved to Northern Kentucky, it was announced Wednesday.

The tournament will take place Oct.29-30 at Ryle High School and Gray Middle School in Union.

The event originally was scheduled to be played at Bellarmine College in Louisville. The Future Farmers of America's national convention, scheduled that weekend in Louisville, caused area hotels to be booked.

This is the second state tournament of the school year pulled from Louisville.

The girls basketball championship (March 22-25, 2000) was moved from Louisville Gardens to McBrayer Arena in Richmond after area hotels were similarly booked up for a national trucking conference.

The tourney has alternated sites annually between Louisville and Northern Kentucky the past several years. Last year it was at Ryle.

ADVANCE TICKETS: Beechwood has advance tickets available for its football game Friday against Covington Catholic. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students, and are available from 8a.m.-3:30p.m. today and Friday at Beechwood.

GIRLS SOCCER: Holy Cross converted all five shots in a penalty kick shootout, giving the Indians a 3-2 victory over St.Henry.

Tied 4-4, Ashley Noll scored what proved to be the winner. Senior goalie Natalie Gardner then stopped St.Henry's final shot.

        • Junior striker Stacey Clark scored her 12th goal of the season off an assist by Hope Gerhardstein six minutes into the second half to lift Bishop Brossart to a 2-0 victory over Dixie Heights.

Erin Aviles followed with a score several minutes later. Sophomore goalie Joanna Henke recorded her fourth shutout.

“I was a little nervous going into the season with a sophomore in goal,” Brossart coach Mike Shelton said. “The defense is doing a great job, and she hasn't been tested as yet.”

Off to a 7-1 start, Brossart will be tested Saturday, playing at South Oldham. South Oldham is the top-ranked girls team in Kentucky.

        • Katie Holtzapfel's fifth goal of the season gave Ryle a 1-0 victory over Scott.
