Bauer loses campaign head to Forbes
WASHINGTON The chairman of Gary Bauer's presidential campaign defected Wednesday to Steve Forbes' team, giving the millionaire publisher a public relations victory in the battle to emerge as the leading conservative in the 2000 race.
Charles Jarvis, Mr. Bauer's national campaign chairman, said he decided to jump ship because Mr. Bauer cannot win. Mr. Forbes, he said, is the only conservative who has a chance of defeating Republican presidential front-runner George W. Bush.
The move comes as Mr. Bauer seeks to position himself as the conservative choice following a fourth-place finish in the Iowa Straw Poll.
Mr. Forbes, who also is actively seeking the conservative mantle, finished second in the nonbinding vote.
We're going to win the Republican nomination and the presidency by uniting economic and social conservatives and building a new conservative majority, Mr. Forbes said in welcoming Mr. Jarvis.
Analysts said Wednesday Mr. Jarvis' move might indicate that conservative Republicans are beginning to coalesce around stronger candidates.
While Mr. Bauer has done reasonably well raising money, people have to ask themselves who is going to be left standing at the end, said David Rohde, a professor of political science at Michigan State University.
