St. Xavier 14, Indianapolis Cathedral 7

At Cathedral — Sophomore quarterback Marty Mooney threw two TD passes in his first start, giving the Bombers the hard fought victory.

Inserted in the lineup due to his strong arm, Mooney completed 10-of-19 passes for 149 yards while tailback Steve Sollmann rushed for 91 yards on 20 carries.

St. X got on the scoreboard first when Mooney found Eric Arling alone in the end zone from 39 yards out. But, the conversion kick was wide.

The Bombers took a seemingly safe 14-0 lead early in the third quarter on a Mooney to Nick Larsen aerial, but Cathedral's Otis Shannon broke loose from 80 yards out on the first play from scrimmage following the kickoff.

After Cathedral drove to the St. X 11 late in the game, the Bomber defense held to preserve the victory, their third in as many outings while handing Cathedral its first setback.

St. X was plagued by eight penalties while Cathedral was only flagged three times for 25 yards.
