SATURDAY HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
McNick gets rare win over Anderson
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Beating Anderson has been a difficult task for the McNicholas boys soccer team. But the Rockets were up to the task Saturday for only the third time in 15 years.
Two goals by Scott Tilford and another by Mike Zoller lifted the Rockets to a 3-0 victory over the Redskins at McNicholas.
This is definitely a confidence builder, McNicholas coach Brian Berning said. Until today, we've only beaten Anderson twice since 1984, the first when I was a senior (1988) and the second in 1995.
Despite the shutout, Berning wasn't happy with the Rockets defense.
Our defense has been struggling, Berning said. We gave up too many shots (12), and the final score didn't indicate the closeness of the game.
McNicholas took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the game on Zoller's goal and increased it to 2-0 at halftime. Tilford now has five goals in two games.
GIRLS SOCCER: Ashley Wesley and Amber Silvis each scored goals during the final 12 seconds, giving Western Brown a 3-1 victory over Georgetown in Mt.Orab.
This is the first time we've beaten Georgetown, Western Brown coach Ty Shipley said. We're in our fifth year, and this is our best start (5-0).
The score was tied with 23 seconds left when Amanda Fisher found Wesley breaking down the right side. She made a crossing pass that Wesley took to beat the Georgetown goalie.
Ashley Silvis then stole the pass off the Georgetown kickoff, passed to her sister, Amber, who scored as the horn sounded to end the game.
Freshman goalie Kristen Thomas didn't buckle under pressure during the final 20 minutes, stopping a barrage of shots and enabling Glen Este to hold on for a 2-1 victory over McNicholas.
Kristina Wilson and Rachel Barron each scored in the first half for Glen Este.
Sarah Huber pulled the Rockets within one with a goal 20 minutes into the second half.
Anderson broke a three-game losing streak, erupting for four goals to hand Milford a 4-1 loss.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: Defending Division I champion St.Xavier placed three runners in the top 10 to capture the Moeller Invitational at Galbreath Field.
Colerain's Mason Ward, the 1999 Division I 1,600-meter state track champion, was the individual winner in 15:40, with Andy Weitmarschen from St.X a distant second.
Elder scored 30 points to win the Lakota Fall Classic at the Voice of America Park.
Jason Krumpelbeck was Elder's best, taking third in 16:55, followed by Jon Wagner (16:56), Greg Dickman (16:59), Nick Westman (17:12) and Kurtis Smith (17:15).
Lakota East senior Jerry Claunch was the easy winner, covering the 3.1 miles in 16:31. Bob Wagner from Oak Hills was second in 16:51.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: Lindsay Zinn of Lakota East set a Voice of America course record of 18:42 to claim the individual championship at the Lakota Fall Classic.
Sycamore won the team championship.
Defending Division I state champion Colerain won the Moeller Invitational at Galbreath Field.
