ESPN: The good, the bad, the other

BY JOHN FAY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Five things ESPN has brought us that we really like:

        • 1. Dan Patrick. The Mason Kid is the best sports anchor working today. We hate that he's giving up SportsCenter shifts for radio.

        • 2. Joe Morgan and Jon Miller. They give you a lesson about baseball every time they call a game without doing it the George Will high-and-mighty way.

        • 3. Dickie Vitale. You've got to love his enthusiasm and his unabashed fandom.

        • 4. The SportsCentury series. The 50 Greatest Athletes is the best TV sports documentary ever. Period.

        • 5. Bob Ley. He's thoughtful, never over the top, and he does some of the most important sports stories on TV.

Five things ESPN brought us that we really don't like:

        • 1. Craig Kilbourne. Full of self. Smug. And Tom Snyder got more laughs on the late, late shift.

        • 2. ESPN: The Magazine. It's too hard too tell ESPN: The Copy from ESPN: The Ads.

        • 3. Dickie Vitale. You've got to hate his constant screaming and his unabashed praise of anything hoops.

        • 4. Draft shows. Basically it's list reading with highlights.

        • 5. Anchors (there are too many to name) who love to hear themselves talk. Get to highlights and save the standup for the nearest comedy club.

Five things ESPN brought us that we really aren't sure whether we like or not:

        • 1. Mel Kiper. He knows all there is to know about every college football player in the country. But is that a good thing?

        • 2. Australian Rules Football. We watched it a lot in the early days, but we never learned the rules.

        • 3. That yellow line they use on football broadcasts. It's nice, we guess, but do you need a degree from MIT to figure out how far they have to go on third-and-10?

        • 4. Midnight basketball games. If you're in college, they're great — more time to party before tipoff. If you're not, they're bad — getting to bed at 3a.m. plays havoc with your body clock.

        • 5. ESPN Classic. We get Time Warner Cable, so we've never seen it.
