A SECOND OPINION

BY MIKE BALL
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Imagine. The new Bengals Stadium is scheduled to come in under budget. Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised. After all, Mike Brown makes sure the Bengals come in under budget every season.

        SPEAKING OF THE BENGALS:

• Paying $42 for a preseason Bengals game has to hurt more than a sales tax to finance $250,000 worth of for the new stadium walls.

        • Is the passion for the Bengals, despite this lost decade, an indication of the power of the NFL? Or is it a better indication of what whiners Cincinnati sports fans can be?

        • How about the Bengals' flagship station? Its talk shows are dominated by Bengals bashing from 6a.m. to 6p.m. On game days, it presents a three- to four-hour pregame show dominated by, well, Bengals bashing. Wonder what Mr. Brown thinks about that?

        • A winless preseason? You'd have to try to do that, wouldn't you?

THERE'S A BAD FEELING here that Greg Vaughn is starting to get a dose of the Eric Davis treatment.

No doubt, Vaughn needs to crank it up. He picked a bad time for the season-high, 53 at-bat homerless streak he took into the weekend.

But Vaughn doesn't deserve the ever-increasing bashing from Reds fans. He is what he is, a streaky power hitter prone to strikeouts.

Vaughn has been a stand-up guy all season, good or bad, just the way Davis was.

If anything, fans should look at it this way: Vaughn would appear to be getting nearer the Reds' price range.

SAMMY SOSA AND MARK MCGWIRE seem sure to obliterate their home run madness of a year ago. Yes, homers are flying out of ballparks at an unparalleled pace.

But how do you explain that Sosa's 57 homers entering Saturday were 39 percent more than Ken Griffey Jr.'s No.3 total (41) and McGwire's 52 homers were 27 percent more?

HERE'S A THOUGHT. Where do all those crazed Bearcats fans go in football season?

        SPEAKING OF BOB HUGGINS:

We believe him when he says that the big schools want no part of the Bearcats during the regular season.

But let's hope that with three straight early exits in the NCAA Tournament, UC doesn't give up trying to improve the non-conference schedule.

        IS SEPTEMBER HEAVEN?

Prep football Fridays.

        College football Saturdays.

        NFL Sundays.

        Pennant races.

        The Ryder Cup.

        The U.S. Open.

        A full NASCAR slate.

        Home run races.

        And hockey camps opening?
