Xavier, UC open volleyball season tonight

Xavier seeks a third consecutive win over Cincinnati when the teams open their seasons at 7 p.m. today in UC's Shoemaker Center.

        UC leads the series 17-7.

The Musketeers were 19-10 last year and had the third-best winning percentage in program history. They advanced to the Atlantic 10 tournament semifinals before losing in five sets to Temple. Four starters return. Floyd Deaton is the reigning Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.

The Bearcats, 21-12 in 1998, have won 20 or more matches four consecutive years but have to replace four starters. “All three years I've been here we've had a new team,” coach Laura Alford said. “We expect a lot from them year in and year out.”
