Trenton school upgrades begin

BY SUE KIESEWETTER

TRENTON — An expansion at Babeck Elementary School will begin this month, with work to be completed next August.

Gebhart Contractors Inc. has been named general contractor for the project, which has been divided into three parts. The company's bid of $2.3 million was the lowest of 12 submitted.

The work will be paid for with proceeds from an $18.9 million bond issue that was approved by voters in November. That money also will pay for a 78,900-square-foot expansion of Edgewood High School; a connector between Trenton and Bloomfield elementary schools; and an upgrade of the gym at Trenton elementary.

The Edgewood Board of Education this week also awarded contracts totaling $1.23 million for plumbing, electrical, and heating and air conditioning work at Babeck elementary, said James Patrick, Edgewood construction manager.

Under phase A, a two-story, 12-classroom wing will be built on the north end of the school. The addition also will include a media center, school offices, a teachers' workroom and a conference room.

That work is expected to be finished April 21, so that over spring break, classes in the existing portion of the building can move into the new section. That would allow more time for renovation on the older building, Mr. Patrick said.

“That should allow us to finish renovation and construc tion of the new gymnasium by August 2000,” he said.

Phases B and C include renovations to the existing building and construction of a gymnasium, to be done at the same time. The new gym will be built off the existing stage in the multipurpose room that now serves as both gymnasium and cafeteria.

Once the gym is finished, the multipurpose room will be used only as a cafeteria. The stage will be accessible from either the cafeteria or gym, Mr. Patrick said.

The 5,000-square-foot gym will include lockers, showers, restrooms and storage. Altogether, about 32,000 square feet will be added to the school, more than doubling its capacity from about 200 to 500 students.
