Second woman sues over employee dunking
BY BEN L. KAUFMAN

A second woman has sued Hamilton County over what they say is a tradition of dunking departing corrections officers in tubs of water on their last day at the Justice Center.
Lynette Pleasant's complaint for more than $4 million was filed in U.S. District Court by attorney Dave R. West.
Co-defendants include the sheriff's department and 14 deputies/corrections officers.
Corrections Officer Cavoya Edwards sued in December for a similar amount, saying she was injured when she tried to protect Officer Pleasant in the melee.
Their suits stem from the attempted hazing in December 1997.
The two women said co-workers tried to dunk Officer Pleasant despite her repeated requests to be spared the ordeal.
Officers Edwards and Pleasant resisted successfully but Officer Edwards was injured slightly.
The sheriff's internal affairs unit confirmed the women's story, concluded that two sergeants failed to prevent the hazing, and said dunking should not be permitted. Tuesday, sheriff's spokesman Steve Barnett would not comment on either suit or on the claim that dunking was a tradition in the department.
