UNION, Ky. The Belfry Pirates brought their Locked and Loaded Tour to Ryle Saturday, but the Raiders didn't give Belfry a shot.
Ryle, in its first season as a Class 4A team and its first season under new coach Kyle Hockman, got four touchdown passes from senior quarterback Justin Parr to overwhelm Class 2A Belfry (1-1) 42-17 in the first game of the third annual Comair Bowl at Ryle.
Parr, who played linebacker last year, teamed up with senior wide receiver Mike Setters on six completions for 153 yards and three touchdowns, including a 60-yard bomb that left Ryle with a 35-3 halftime lead.
I expected a lot of big plays, Hockman said. I didn't expect this much scoring. I expected us to have some first-game jitters.
The Raiders were able to shrug off 11 penalties, mainly due to the passing of Parr, who was 13-for-20 for 236 yards and four touchdowns.
He's real confident, Hockman said. He's calm, and he doesn't get rattled.
Setters gave Ryle a 14-3 lead with a 27-yard touchdown reception that he tipped to himself away from a defender. After a short Belfry punt, Parr tried to hit Setters in the end zone, but the ball was intercepted by Jonah Caudill, who returned it to the 19-yard line. Caudill was met by Parr and sophomore Travis Grant, who hit him and forced a fumble, which Grant scooped up and returned 19 yards for the touchdown.
I was surprised, said Grant, who scored another touchdown and gained 75 yards on 18 carries. The ball just popped out, and I picked it up and ran it in.
Justin gave him a pretty good hit, Setters said.
