Beechwood 35, Western Hills 0

FORT THOMAS — Beechwood coach Mike Yeagle pointed to the trophy from Saturday's St.Luke Hospitals Champions Bowl game against Western Hills and said it wasn't the one he wanted.

Yeagle also can point to senior Ben List and junior Nick Sketch for giving the Tigers a 35-0 shutout of Western Hills at Highlands. List carried 15 times for 106 yards and two touchdowns, and Sketch carried 18 times for 105 yards and two more TDs.

“We want to get to Louisville. That's all there is to it,” Yeagle said, referring to the Class A state finals in December. “We've got to get in better shape. It was hot, it was brutal conditions, but I felt our kids did a great job in the second half, which shows me our kids have been in the weight room.”

Beechwood, ranked first in the state Class A rankings, gained 325 yards for the game. Western Hills coach Ed Youngs said his team was done in by Beechwood's experience and by not having practiced enough.

“The only way we can get better is to have more practice, and this is a great scrimmage for us,” Youngs said. “It's the only way to look at it. (Saturday) was the day we usually play our second scrimmage. ... We're gonna be a lot better team in five or six weeks.”

Beechwood's huge offensive and defensive lines took control early. The Tigers held Western Hills on the opening drive of the game.

The Tigers scored on List's 7-yard run with 4:05 left in the first quarter. List carried on eight of the drive's nine plays for 37 yards.

Western Hills turned to junior Kevin Furlow on the ensuing possession. He came through — four carries for 26 yards — and the Mustangs had the ball on the Beechwood 24.

Beechwood senior tackle Matt Wagner came through on the next play. He stripped the ball from senior fullback Charles Newton and recovered the mistake at the Tigers 23.

But Beechwood did not convert. In fact, the Tigers stayed cold until the third quarter.

After freshman Philip Ridgell's 26-yard kickoff return put the ball at the Beechwood 41, Sketch carried eight times for 56 yards, including the 10-yard TD run with 6:20 left in the period that gave Beechwood a 14-0 lead.

It took just 55 seconds for Beechwood to make it 21-0. Two plays after senior defensive back Josh Kaiser recovered a Furlow fumble, Sketch was in from 5 yards out.

List carried a Western Hills defender 5 yards for a TD with 8:45 left in the game, and senior Joe Hampel's 3-yard run with 2:13 remaining ended the scoring.
