'Story' lures literary stars for anniversary

BY JACKIE DEMALINE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Locally published and national award-winning Story magazine will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a double issue featuring short fiction by some best friends.

The 20 contributors include Pulitzer Prize winner Carol Shields and National Book Award winners Joyce Carol Oates, Andrea Barrett and Barry Lopez.

All the stories in the issue are commissions.

“I knew exactly who I wanted,” says editor Lois Rosenthal. Authors Story discovered and name authors who've been close to the magazine since the beginning.

“It's a literary love fest. It's done in that spirit.”

The issue will be on newsstands Sept. 15.

The original Story debuted in 1931. It was re-launched by F&W Publications in 1989. Since then it has been a two-time winner of the National Magazine Award.

The anniversary issue will include a comprehensive index of stories and authors since the beginning. They include John Steinbeck, Langston Hughes, J.D. Salinger and Carson McCullers.

While this is a 10th anniversary celebration, it's one with a bittersweet edge. Story will be retired with the sale of F&W, currently under way. The winter issue, which will go on sale in December, will be its last.
