Boone Co. citizens get a say in police study

BURLINGTON A group of citizens will get to help decide whether Boone County's two police agencies should merge.
Boone County Fiscal Court unanimously voted Tuesday to establish a citizen's committee that would accom pany a study by the Southern Police Institute. The institute would examine whether to merge the county police department and the sheriff's office.
This is the group that the police department, the FOP and the sheriff's office all feel comfortable with, Judge-executive Gary Moore said.
Mr. Moore said the size and make up of the committee will be determined in the next week or two.
Some have complained about the duplication within the two agencies. The study and citizen's group will help answer those questions.
By December, the Southern Police Institute should complete an audit and analysis of both departments.
