Pipe bomb discovered at construction site

The Cincinnati Enquirer

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP — A pipe bomb was found Thursday at the construction site of a Warren County ranch home, but later was disposed of safely by police.

A worker was packing dirt against the foundation of the home on East Hatt Swank Road when he found a 6- to 8-inch pipe near the half-built garage.

“I was about to throw it away, but they said we better call police,” Danny R. Stringer said, “I tried to take the lid off of it. I didn't realize how dangerous it was.”

Hamilton Township police and the Cincinnati Bomb Squad stopped work on the house for almost three hours to disarm the bomb. .

Police don't have any leads on who made or left the pipe bomb. They told Gil Adkins, the owner of the house, that it was functional and, if it were triggered, could have killed or injured two to three people. But Mr. Stringer suspects that the bomb was just discarded on the property and was not intended for blowing up the house.

“A construction site is a good place to throw things away so no one will find them. If they wanted to blow up the house, they would have hidden it inside,” he said.
