LOCAL SPORTS DIGEST




        MIAMI: Kelly Harper (swimming and diving) and Wally Szczerbiak (basketball) were named Thursday as Miami University's female and male athletes of the year. Also honored were two MU track and field stars, Tricia Roddy (Seton High) and Chris Swank, as female and male student-athletes of the year.

        CINCINNATI STATE: Tom Chambers will coach Cincinnati State Technical and Community College's baseball team when it begins play at the club level in spring 2000. Chambers was coach at Withrow High School for 34 years.

        NKU: Northern Kentucky University has signed three baseball players:

        • Kenny Kober from Harrison, a pitcher who went 7-1 with a 2.36 ERA this spring.

        • Devin Brown from Bellefontaine, Ohio, an outfielder who batted .370 this spring with 25 steals.

        • James Hanlon from Carroll County, Ky., who hit .498 this spring.

        THOMAS MORE: Kathy Herring, a former tennis standout at the University of Kentucky, has been hired as Thomas More College women's tennis coach.

        RIVERHAWKS: The Cincinnati Riverhawks snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating the San Francisco Bay Seals 3-2 after overtime in a 10-round shootout Wednesday in San Francisco.

        AAU GIRLS: The Cincinnati Tarheels girls-14 AAU basketball team recently won the 1999 Youth Basketball of America national title in Orlando, Fla. The team, comprised primarily of sophomores throughout Greater Cincinnati:

        Tara Boothe (Highlands, tournament MVP), Erin Schmitt and Kari Tepe (both Indian Hill), Erica Hallman (Holmes), Michelle Kelly (St. Bernard), Pam Watts (Walnut Hills), Kelley Phillips (Goshen) and Jonna Patterson (Reading). Coaches were Jon Perry (Indian Hill HS) and Monique Greene (Holmes HS).
