Child pornographer, 79, receives 10-year sentence

Mount Lookout child pornographer William John Garvey was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison, a $500 fine and three years probation.
Mr. Garvey, 79, pleaded guilty in March to five counts of interstate transportation of child pornography pictures taken in his home.
Between March 18, 1997, and June 10, 1998, Mr. Garvey photographed females under age 18 during sex acts and carried the color Polaroid photos to his second home in Louisville, where his wife lives, prosecutors said.
As part of the plea agreement, Mr. Garvey forfeited his Harvey Avenue home, his 1991 GMC van and a 1994 Acura sedan. An additional 59 related charges were dismissed.
U.S. District Judge S. Arthur Spiegel also ordered Mr. Garvey to register as a sex offender upon release from prison. After release, he must be evaluated by a psychiatrist and, if deemed necessary, must continue psychiatric counseling through his probation.
Court records said the sentance and the fine were much lower than the federal sentancing guidelines — which call for fines up to $250,000 and more than 11 years on each count — because of Mr. Garvey's age and health.
