Brossart, Dixie win district softball

The Cincinnati Enquirer

In its first year of fast-pitch softball, Bishop Brossart captured the 36th District title in a 16-10, 12-inning victory over Pendleton County on Thursday at Kenton Lakes.

Senior Leanne Phirman drove in the winning run with a single, and tournament MVP Jo Hartig added a bases-loaded triple as the Mustangs scored six runs in the top of the 12th.

“We wanted to score as many as possible,” Brossart coach Mel Webster said. “The inning before, we scored three, and it wasn't enough.”

Two innings earlier, the outcome didn't look good for the Mustangs as Pendleton County loaded the bases with no outs. But sophomore Mindy Barrow pitched out of the jam. Bishop Brossart ....... 042  000  001  036—16  27  3

        • Dixie Heights 11, Simon Kenton 7, 34th District at Dixie Heights — Junior Amy Simpson broke a 6-6 tie with a two-run double in the fourth inning as Dixie Heights captured its fifth consecutive district championship. The victory avenged two regular-season losses to Simon Kenton.

“We were confident we could beat them,” Dixie coach Dean Fookes said. “We concentrated on not giving up any big innings. That has been our weakness this year.”

Eighth-grade lefty Lyndsey Mayberry settled down and earned the victory after giving up five runs in the first three innings.

Both teams advanced to the regional tournament next week.

“It's almost a tradition to win the district for us,” Fookes said. “We've lost in the regional finals the last two years. Maybe this is our year.” Simon Kenton ....... 113  101  0— 7  10  2
