Tennis semifinal all Indian Hill

BY DAVE SCHUTTE

Indian Hill's Ryan McCarthy and David Gebhart had the same reaction to what could be an intense and emotional match.

“We've played challenge matches, but it won't be any fun playing a teammate,” McCarthy said. “One thing is for sure: Neither of us will get any coaching.”

By winning first-round and quarterfinal matches in the Division II district tournament on Thursday at Princeton, McCarthy and Gebhart advanced to Saturday's 9:30 a.m. semifinals.

“The mental part of the match will be the toughest,” Gebhart said. “Ryan beat me early in the season, but I won the last two times. It should be a great match.”

Indian Hill coach Adam Wolter also wasn't looking forward to the confrontation.

“I'll stand back and make sure tempers are controlled and everything goes all right,” Wolter said.

Jason Zimmermann of Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy and Brandon Smith of Seven Hills also advanced and will meet in the other semifinal.

Zimmermann, who finished third at the Cincinnati East sectional, defeated Steve Wilson of Springfield Shawnee and Middletown Fenwick's Brian Butt, the Cincinnati West sectional champion.

Cincinnati players dominated both the Dayton Division I and Cincinnati Division II district tournaments.

Defending Division I state champion Eric Pittman of Sycamore qualified for state with easy victories over Ben Jackson of Fairmont (6-0, 6-0) and David Oyler of Oak Hills (6-0, 6-1).

Although the semifinal and championship matches aren't scheduled until Saturday, all of the quarterfinal winners in both divisions earned a spot in the state tournament next week at Ohio State University.

Also advancing in Division I were Arno Schwanz of Fairfield and Turpin's Dan Wieczorek, along with the Sycamore doubles team of Artie Peller and James Tyler.

The Seven Hills doubles team of Justin Sakai and Alex Comisar and CHCA's Robbie Carress and Matt Thinness also advanced in Division II.
