CRESTVIEW HILLS Covington Latin sophomore Miriam Rahali crashed Notre Dame's 12th Region tennis party Wednesday by reaching the singles finals. On Thursday, Rahali (15-0) made off with the good china and silverware.
Rahali upset defending champion Lyndsey Molony of Notre Dame 6-3, 6-0 at the Four Seasons Sports Country Club.
I didn't think I'd have her in trouble, Rahali said. I just played my game. I just tried to get everything back.
The beginning of the end for Molony (14-1) may have come Wednesday.
After beating Lloyd's Dylan Lower in the semifinals, Molony lost to Oak Hills junior Elizabeth Brunsman in an Ohio Valley Tennis Association 18-under tournament. Thursday's match against Rahali was her third in less than 24 hours.
It did affect me a little, Molony said.
Brunsman and Rahali are practice partners, and after a telephone strategy session, a plan was hatched: Hit to Molony's backhand. That worked, and Rahali won the championship.
Notre Dame was guaranteed a win in doubles. Top seeds Lindsay Dressman and Jessica Kirkpatrick defeated No.2 Sara Lange and Rachel Summe 6-3, 6-2.
