Seven Hills, Fairfield players claim tennis crowns

Brandon Smith, a Seven Hills junior, defeated Ryan McCarthy from Indian Hill to capture the Cincinnati East Division II sectional tennis championship Friday at Sawyer Point.
Seeded No.1, Jason Zimmermann from Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy defeated David Gebhart to take third place.
In the Cincinnati East Division I sectional tournament, also at Sawyer Point, Arno Schwanz from Fairfield defeated Elder's Rob Altenau for the championship. David Oyler of Oak Hills was third.
The four seeded doubles teams in both the Division I and II East sectionals also advanced to next week's district tournaments.
In the Cincinnati West Division II sectional at Fairfield, Middletown Fenwick freshman Brian Butt knocked off Hamilton Badin's John Lanni 7-6, 6-2 for the championship.
The New Richmond doubles team of Robby Abbott and Aaron Burleson also was victorious.
In the rain-delayed Cincinnati West Division I sectional, defending state singles champion Eric Pittman of Sycamore, Turpin's Nick Kotsonis, Princeton's Kevin Teufel and Turpin's Dan Wiecsorek advanced to today's semifinals at 9a.m. at Princeton.
As expected, both of Sycamore's doubles teams, along with Anderson's and Turpin's doubles teams, advanced to the semifinals and qualified to next week's district meet in Dayton.
The top four singles players and doubles teams in both divisions and sectionals make the district meet.
Baseball
Lakota West 10, St. Xavier 7, Division I sectional at Hamilton Lakota West overcame a six-run deficit to claim the first sectional championship in school history.
Lakota West took advantage of nine walks and six Bombers errors to tie the game.
Glen Este 12, Anderson 7, Division I sectional at Midland Glen Este matched its season high for runs scored. The Trojans erased a six-run deficit with a five-run fourth inning.
Junior Greg Kelly delivered a bases-loaded triple in the fourth to pull the score to 6-5. In the fifth inning, Lee Gilliam drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-run single.
Madeira 8, Wyoming 1, Division III sectional at Tealtown Madeira won its first sectional championship since 1997 with its third victory over Wyoming.
The Mustangs are determined to make an impact after being seeded No.1 last year and losing in the first round to Finneytown.
We're aggravated about last year, Coach Jack Kuzniczci, We have almost everyone back from 1997's regional team. We want to win state.
Kenny Fields notched his seventh victory with a complete game.
North College Hill 6, Indian Hill 3, Division III sectional at Tealtown Junior pitcher Tony Samad settled down after allowing three first-inning runs.
Samad went the distance and scattered six hits with seven strikeouts.
Softball
Glen Este 1, Sycamore 0, Division I sectional at Rumpke Park Caryn Reick drove in Katie Chapman in the sixth inning as Glen Este ousted top-seeded Sycamore. The game was postponed in the third inning Thursday due to rain.
Sarah Young allowed four hits in seven innings of work.
McNicholas 1, Loveland 0, Division I sectional at Rumpke Park For the sec ond straight game, McNicholas played giant killer.
After an upset victory over No.2 seed Amelia on Monday, the Rockets downed No.3 seed Loveland in eight innings.
Senior Sandy Basista, pitching with a broken wrist on her glove hand, went the distance. Basista limited Loveland to two hits and two walks while striking out 10.
Sophomore center fielder Carrie Albertz delivered the game-winning hit.
Seton 3, Oak Hills 1, Division I sectional at Lakota Junior Jody Schroeder provided all the offense pitcher Sondra Roberto needed.
Schroeder drove in all three Seton runs, including a two-run triple in the fourth. Roberto scattered five hits in the complete-game victory.
Little Miami 18, Blanchester 3, Division II sectional at Dayton Delco Park Junior second baseman Angela Howard delivered two bases-loaded triples in an 11-run sixth inning rally.
