Westwood boy, 13, shot, critical

Police late Sunday were investigating a shooting that left a 13-year-old Westwood boy in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head.

The shooting occurred about 7:10 p.m. in the Ferncrest Court apartment complex in Westwood. The victim, who neighbors said was a seventh-grade student at Westwood Elementary School, was being treated at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Police and the hospital did not release the name of the victim.

Police at the scene confirmed a juvenile had been shot in the head and at least one other juvenile was being questioned in connection with the shooting. A handgun was recovered near the shooting scene, police said.

Neighbors said the shooting occurred on the balcony of a vacant apartment in the 3100 block of Ferncrest Court.

One apartment complex resident said he was playing basketball in the parking lot when several people ran outside and said someone had been shot.

Some apartment residents said a group of teens had been seen playing with a gun in the parking lot shortly before the shooting.
