GREEN TOWNSHIP Thomas Luebbe, assistant principal and dean of academics at LaSalle High School, will become principal of the all-male parochial school in July.
Mr. Luebbe, who began his career at LaSalle in 1976 as band director, will replace John Strathern, who will leave the school in June after five years as principal.
The appointment was approved by the Most Rev. Daniel E. Pilarczyk, archbishop of Cincinnati.
Becoming principal has always been an aspiration, said Mr. Luebbe, because I feel it is a calling of mine to serve the LaSalle community in this way.
Sister Catherine Kirby, S.C., assistant superintendent of secondary schools, said Mr. Luebbe's strong academic leadership, his belief in the importance of faculty, his presence, his commitment to treat each young man as an individual.
She also praised Mr. Luebbe for his strong faith and modeling of Christian values, and his vision for LaSalle matched the qualifications identified as important to the future of LaSalle.
A 1973 graduate, Mr. Luebbe began his career at LaSalle part time in 1976 as band director. In 1977, he was offered a full-time teaching position in math and music while continuing to direct the school band.
He taught at Moeller High School for four years begin ning in 1980, returning to LaSalle in 1984.
He became LaSalle's assistant principal and academic dean in 1995.
He was named teacher of the year in 1992 by the LaSalle High School Board of Trustees, earned the Distinguished Lasallian Educator Award in 1991 and the Brother James Daniel Memorial Award in 1987.
Mick Owens, who teaches English and Latin and served on the search committee, said Mr. Luebbe was selected because he is an extremely dedicated teacher and administrator. He believes each student can be successful. He goes out of the way to help students, in individual conferences, tutoring students, Mr. Owens said.
He tries to help the kids find what they need to find that success.
