Hawkins honored as trustee emeritus of Freedom Center

BY LUCY MAY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

        The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center's board of trustees honored Dr. Lawrence C. Hawkins as its first trustee emeritus and also appointed nine new members and several advisory trustees.

        “Throughout his tenure of service, Dr. Hawkins has been pivotal to the Freedom Center by providing insight into its theoretical framework,” John Fleming, the center's director and chief operating officer, said in a statement on the action taken at the board's annual meeting.

        Dr. Hawkins was a University of Cincinnati vice president from 1976 to 1984. Before that, he was assistant superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools, the first African-American to hold such a high-ranking position.

        He also was the first African-American in the school system to be principal of a mixed-race elementary school and later of a mixed-race junior high school.

        New board members include:

        Ellsworth Brown, president and CEO of Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh;

        Richard Davis, vice chairman of Fir star;

        Candace Kendle, chief executive officer of Kendle International;

        Dan Meyer, chairman, president and CEO of Milacron Inc.;

        Linda Noble, senior vice president of human resources for Comair;

        James F. Orr, president, CEO and director of Convergys Corp.;

        Susan Pichler, community volunteer;

        Barbara Scott Preiskel, an attorney and volunteer;

        George Schaefer Jr., president and CEO of Fifth Third Bank.

        The board also reappointed Harry Whipple, president and publisher of The Enquirer, and U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Nathaniel Jones as co-chairmen, Robert Harrod as vice chairman, Miron Dale as treasurer and Francie Hiltz as secretary.

        The following advisory board members also were appointed:

        Hamilton High School teacher Patricia Ellis

        Wilmington College professor Larry Gara

        Jerry A. Grundhofer, chairman, president and CEO of Firstar

        Nick Clooney, a columnist and host of American Movie Classics.

        The museum is scheduled to open on the riverfront in 2003.
