TRISTATE MARKET SPOTLIGHT

Profit projection sparks GE shares

General Electric Co. rose $4.061/4, or 3.87 percent, to $109 after the company's chairman told analysts that GE's per-share profit in 1999 will “at least” meet analysts' expectations for a 14 percent increase. GE made $2.80 a fully diluted share in 1998 and is expected to earn almost $3.20 in 1999.

Chairman John F. Welch attributed the rise to service contracts and acquisitions. Mr. Welch said will boost its operating profit margin in the second quarter to “19 percent plus” from 18 percent a year ago.
