N.KY. HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

Pioneers surprise in tourney

The Cincinnati Enquirer

No one, including Simon Kenton baseball coach John Finn, expected the Pioneers to reach the semifinals of the prestigious Doc Morris Baseball Tournament.

But the Pioneers posted victories over Newport (6-3) and St. Henry (7-3) on Saturday and will play Dixie Heights in the semifinals at 1p.m. today at Turkeyfoot Junior High School.

In the other semifinal game at Scott, Covington Catholic meets Bishop Brossart with the winners playing for the championship at Thomas More College (4:30 p.m.)

“We lost five in a row coming into today,” Finn said. “We've been struggling and not playing good defense and not getting consistent pitching.”

In its opening win, Simon Kenton's Russell Sexton striking out seven and allowing five hits.

Junior Jeff Setters provided the offense in the victory over St.Henry. He went 3-for-4, including a triple and two RBI.

“This could be a momentum builder,” Finn said. “We're a young team and we knew we would struggle early.”

Pitching carried Dixie Heights into the semifinals against Simon Kenton with Jay Wueller scattering seven hits in a 4-0 victory over Holmes in the first game.

Junior Chris Unkraut tossed a no-hitter in the second game, striking out 12 in a 2-0 victory over Beechwood. The Colonels take a 15-5 record into today's game against Simon Kenton, now 7-9.

Bishop Brossart advanced to the semifinals with victories over Scott (5-4) and Conner (17-9) in games played at Scott.

Jeff Schwegmann came up with the big hit against Scott, a run scoring single in the seventh while Justin Seiter, 5-for-9 on the day, hit a three-run homer in the second game victory over Conner.

Covington Catholic has been an inconsistent hitting team this season but the Colonels swung the big bats in posting victories over Campbell County (14-1) and Lloyd (15-11) on Saturday at Campbell County.

A grand slam home run off the bat of Greg Popham in the bottom of the seventh inning was the game-winner in the slugfest against Lloyd.

Brossart and Covington Catholic have played once this season with the Mustangs defeating the Colonels 4-1 on April 16 at Covington Catholic.

Softball
        • Glen Este 3, Ryle 2 — Ashley Schaefer scored from third on a fielder's choice in the third inning, giving the Trojans the victory over the Raiders.
