Miami golf program looks for save today

Today is Save the Miami University Golf Program at six Shaker Run Corporation golf courses: Beavercreek Golf Club, Deer Run Country Club, Oasis Golf Club, Shaker Run Golf Club, Walden Ponds Golf Club and Traditions Golf Club.

Four courses (Shaker Run, Walden Ponds, Oasis and Traditions) will hold a scramble. Basketball All-American Wally Szczerbiak will be playing at Walden Ponds. Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Bench is playing at Oasis.

Bob Lohr, Miami Hall of Famer, 12-year PGA Tour veteran and one-time winner, will conduct a golf clinic at Oasis.

The scramble will be followed by a silent acution and dinner at Oasis.

Expected to attend the dinner are Bench and Szczerbiak, plus basketball coach Charlie Coles and basketball seniors Damon Frierson and John Estick.

On Friday, Miami's Board of Trustees will decide the fate of the golf program. On Feb. 6, the Miami men's golf, soccer, wrestling and tennis programs were told that if they wanted to continue, they or the university needed to raise a $13 million endowment in 68 days.
