CINCINNATI HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

LaRosa victory proves La Salle still No. 1

BY DAVE SCHUTTE
Enquirer contributor

The LaSalle boys track team has been ranked No.1 in the area for six years, and the rating was on the line Friday.

“We heard all the talk about how Colerain was going to beat us,” LaSalle senior sprinter Dennis Feiglein said. “We weren't going to let that happen without a battle.”

Feiglein took second in the 100 and 200 meters and LaSalle won the prestigious LaRosa Invitational (big-school division). Mount Healthy won the small-school division.

Colerain, the No.1-ranked Division I girls team, easily won the big-school division. Kings won the small-school division.

LaSalle's victories included Geoff Ziegler (shot put), Eric Barney (discus), Brian Pierson (pole vault), Steve Hamilton (300 hurdles) and the 3,200-meter relay.

AIKEN IMPROVING: The Aiken girls team showed promise, led by the 400-meter relay team of Tiffany Graves, Kennetha Harris, Jaquita Stephens and Marquisha Pryor taking gold.

Also, Pryor finished second to Withrow star Tenea Green in the 100 and 200 dashes.

“We were fifth (400-meter relay team) in the regional last year and just missed going to state,” Pryor said. “Our goal is 49 seconds, which should be good enough to qualify to state.”

WARD DOMINATES: Although Mason Ward didn't turn in any personal best times, the Colerain junior was heads above the competition in the 800 and 1,600 meters.

“I was immature as a runner last year,” Ward said. “I've worked on the weights and I'm now a little stronger. Maturity will allow me to take it to the next level.”

After easily winning the 1,600 meters in 4:30, Ward turned it on during the final 200 meters in the 800, to win easily in 1:58.8.

RACING PARTNERS: Colerain's Kelly Crum and Alison Zeinner are best friends and push each other every day during practice.

Paired against each other in the 1600 meters, Crum and Zeinner ran neck-and-neck until the 100-meter mark. At that point, Crum put on a burst of speed to win in 5:20.7.

“I had more left at the end,” Crum said after edging Zeinner, the defending 3,200 meter Division I state champion.

Crum will run the 800 and 1,600 and Zeinner the 1,600 and 3,200 in postseason tournament meets.

MILAN MIRACLE: A second-place finish in the girls small school division, had Milan (Ind.) coach Todd Yates excited.

“We only have 100 girls and 100 boys in the school,” Yates said. “We come every year knowing we probably won't win, but tonight the kids were outstanding.”

Milan girls champions included Charmain Kennett (high jump), Melissa Lynch (discus), Hersha Henneke (100 hurdles) and Lacey Stacey (shot out) with Chris Swisher winning both the 3,200 and 1,600 meter races in the boys competition.

Baseball
        • Anderson 3, Glen Este 1 — Scott Afable went 2-for-3, including a home run and two RBI, to lead the Redskins. Pitcher Ricky Lux struck out 10.

Afable, despite a .485 batting average and a city-best 21 doubles in 1998, was virtually ignored by All-Star team selectors.

“Scott was too good a player not to even get mentioned last season,” Anderson coach Shea Wardwell said. “He has something to prove this season.”

        • Turpin 6, Amelia 4 — A 370-foot, three-run homer by Ryan Hussey in the fourth inning was the big blow for Turpin. It marked the first time in five years that Turpin has beaten Amelia.

Softball
        • St. Ursula 3, Mercy 2 — St. Ursula, after losing to McAuley earlier in the week, won to remain in contention for the Girls Greater Cincinnati League Gray Division title.

Although out-hit 12-7 by Mercy, the Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning with Bridget Kaufman, who led off with a single, scoring on an error.
