Bacon's last shot falls short

Alter wins title 74-71

DAYTON — Jared Niesen's game-tying three-point attempt with three seconds to play fell short, giving Kettering Alter a 74-71 victory over Roger Bacon in a Division II district championship game Thursday night at UD Arena.

Roger Bacon countered a huge inside advantage by Alter's duo of 6-foot-9 senior Keith Waleskowski and 6-8 sophomore Adam Waleskowski by hitting three-point goals.

For the game, Roger Bacon hit 10-of-19 three-pointers. Brian Lakes (23 points) had six three-pointers, Niesen (24 points) had the other four.

Roger Bacon led 33-22 at halftime, but Alter stormed out and scored 10 of the first 12 points in the second half. However, Lakes made three three-pointers in the period to keep the Spartans ahead 50-43.

Alter took a 59-56 lead with a 16-6 barrage in the first 4:15 of the final quarter.

Roger Bacon caught a break when Adam Waleskowski drew a personal foul, then earned a technical by heaving the ball the length of the court.

The Spartans only managed to make two of four foul shots and then missed a shot on their ensuing possession.

The Spartans' strategy of fouling Alter's Chris Goings worked, as he missed both foul shots, but Keith Waleskowski grabbed the rebound and scored, keeping Alter ahead 70-67.

“Our No. 1 thing all week we talked about was rebounding,” Roger Bacon coach Bill Brewer said. “We got outrebounded 30-18 and we were still in a position to win this game.”

        ALTER (74) — Borland 6 5 17, K. Waleskowski 10 2 22, A. Waleskowski 5 0 10, Berardo 1 0 3, Staub 5 2 14, Swanson 1 2 4, Goings 1 2 4. Totals: 29-46 13-18 74.

        ROGER BACON (71) — Huerkamp 1 0 2, Merkle 1 2 4, Schott 1 1 3, Niesen 8 4 24, Lakes 7 3 23, Hausfeld 2 7 11, McManus 2 0 4. Totals: 22-47 17-21 71.

        Alter ....... 16   6  21  31—74

        Roger Bacon ....... 12  21  17  21—71

        Three-point goals: A - Berardo, Staub 2; RB - Niesen 4, Lakes 6. Records: A 17-6, RB 12-11.
