Mt. Notre Dame falls to Beavercreek

BY DAVE SCHUTTE

FAIRBORN — “We want Mason. We want Mason.” That chant came from the Beavercreek student section as the clock ticked off the final minute in the Beavers' 55-37 victory over Mount Notre Dame in the Division I girls regional semifinals at the Nutter Center.

Ranked No. 3 in Ohio, Beavercreek advances to the championship Saturday (11 a.m.) against No. 1 and undefeated Mason. The winner earns a berth in the state semifinals next week at Ohio State's St. John Arena.

Mount Notre Dame had an 18-game winning streak snapped.

“Beavercreek's matchup zone had a cumulative effect on us,” MND coach Chris Mack said. “We got scrappy points and I should have come up with something different to get out shooters better looks.”

It was Beavercreek's zone, used by coach Ed Zink for many years, that forced 27 Cougar turnovers, 15 in the second half, that proved to be the difference.

However, the Cougars had a shot to pull off the upset, rallying from a 26-19 deficit to within two (28-26) with 3:56 remaining in the third quarter.

“Sometimes we coach too much,” Zink said. “We changed what got us the halftime lead and went to a different offense. They forced some turnovers and got back in the game.”

During the early third quarter run, Beavercreek turned the ball over four times.

After a time out, Stefanie Miller made three free throws and Amanda Williams a three-pointer and the Cougars never recovered.

Miller had eight second-half points and came up with four of the Beavers 22 steals which proved to be another obstacle the Cougars couldn't overcome.

Sarah Allen, who will play for Arizona State next year, made no excuses.

“Maybe we celebrated too much after winning the district championship,” Allen said.
