OXFORD Moeller's motivation for Saturday's 55-53 victory over St. Xavier for a Division I sectional title came last month.
St.X drubbed Moeller 76-51 on the Crusaders' Senior Night.
They beat us so badly at our place and frankly kinda rubbed our noses in it, Moeller coach Carl Kremer said. And I think our kids play with a lot of pride.
Sophomore Matt Sylvester sealed the win for Moeller with a layup with 25 seconds left and two free throws with 11 seconds.
St. Xavier made a three-pointer with two seconds left to finish the scoring.
Senior point guard Mike Monserez scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the final quarter. He also had the assist on Sylvester's crucial layup.
Mike's our leader. He's a warrior, Kremer said. He's the best on-court leader I've ever seen in high school basketball.
The game was close the entire second half, and neither team led by more than four points in the fourth quarter.
St. Xavier hurt itself by making only 10-of-20 from the free throw line, including 3-of-7 in the fourth quarter.
Though two losses to St. Xavier during the regular season prevented Moeller from winning the GCL South, the Crusaders got the last laugh.
We didn't win the league, Kremer said. But this is the one that really counted.
