CINCINNATI GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP

Wyoming captures 9th district title of 1990s

Defense and a patient offense, two trademarks of Wyoming basketball, were once again the difference for the Cowboys.

Wyoming used its pressure man-to-man defense in a 46-38 victory over Greeneview in a Division III district championship game at Vandalia Butler Activity Center.

Wyoming is nearly perfect in district championship games in the 1990s. The Cowboys have won every district title in the '90s except for 1995 when Reading pulled the upset.

“We started the season 2-4, and everybody wondered what was wrong,” Wyoming coach Deb Gentile said. “This team is full of surprises; when they got serious they won 12 in a row.”

Wyoming will face undefeated Miami East in a regional semifinal 8p.m. Wednesday at Vandalia. Wyoming defeated Miami East in a district finals last year.

“We only have two seniors and didn't know what to expect going into the season,” Batavia coach Ryan Stoffel said. “I'm proud of the girls. We didn't expect to make it this far.”

Batavia ends its season at 16-7 and returns all but two players next year.

The Cougars play Beavercreek 8p.m. Tuesday at Wright State University's Nutter Center.

“Their press was more effective than we thought it would be,” Mercy coach Mary Jo Huismann said. “We didn't do what we needed to do and that was move the ball quicker and make stronger passes.”

When Mercy scored its first second-half field goal with 17 seconds left in the third quarter, Beavercreek had built a 55-26 lead.

“We shot poorly, but why?” Huismann said. “It was because of their defense. If we shoot well, it could have been a different game.”
