CINCINNATI GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP

Badin beats Bacon for title

Hamilton Badin, the defending state champions, continued its dominance in the Division II district tournament.

The Lady Rams beat Roger Bacon 51-33 on Friday night to claim their fourth straight district title and eighth in the 1990s.

The outcome was never in doubt. Badin led 21-7 at half time. The Lady Rams' man-to-man defense caused 20 first-half turnovers and limited Roger Bacon to one field goal.

“We've worked hard for the last six days to prepare to Roger Bacon,” said Badin coach Dan Purcell, whose team was ranked third in the state in the final AP poll. “We probably know their offense as well as they do.”

The victory was the third over Roger Bacon this season for Badin and gives the Rams 20 wins for the third consecutive season.

Elizabeth Bennett led Badin in the first half with all seven of her points. Lisa Knapp led all scorers for the Rams with 13, and Kerri Fiehrer added 10.

Badin will face Little Miami in the regional semifinals Tuesday night at Vandalia.

“Little Miami has won 19 games and they're having a great year,” Purcell said. “They're just another team in our way of getting to Columbus.”

“The rebound was long, and it came right too me,” said Chamberlain, a 5-foot-7 sophomore. “As for the free throws, I was just hoping they would fall.”

Little Miami's 9-0 run gave the team a 52-48 lead with 1:07 left in the game. Sophomore Courtney Balser sparked the run with two field goals and a steal.

The Lady Panthers went into a four-corner offense in the last minute and pulled out the victory with clutch free-throw shooting. For the quarter Little Miami was 13-of-17 from the free-throw line. Junior Keli Gentry and Jessica Black each were 5-of-6.

“We kept running different players in all game,” Little Miami coach Ed Davis said, “(Dunbar) got tired in the fourth, which played a part in the outcome.”
