Harrison leads way at state wrestling

Locals fare fairly well

Results were mixed for Cincinnati area wrestlers in the first day of competition at the state wrestling tournament at Ohio State's Schottenstein Center on Thursday.

In Division I, 18 of Cincinnati's 36 state qualifiers advanced to the quarterfinals. Harrison led the way, qualifying three wrestlers. Lakota West, Elder, Moeller, St. Xavier and Winton Woods qualified two each.

The McIntire twins from Lakota West, Matt (125 pounds) and Chris (135), both turned in impressive performances along with Princeton's Khetag Pliev, a foreign exchange student from Russia.

Only a handful of wrestlers survived the first round in Division II-III.

Tim Kelly (Reading), Gerald Gertz (Lockland) and Robert Harmon (Carlisle) all won their first-round Division III matches.

Local wrestlers fared a little better in Division II.

Taylor's Tony Brock was impressive in his first match. Brock, the No. 2 ranked 112-pound wrestler in Cincinnati, pinned Chad Long (Paulding) in 2:48 to improve his record to 35-1.

Steve Williams, Cincinnati's top-ranked heavyweight from Purcell Marian, continued his excellent season with a 7-3 decision.

Turpin's Steve Holm recorded a 10-7 upset of Jose Smith of Cambridge at 119 pounds. Smith entered the match with a 31-1 record. Division I
