CINCINNATI BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP


Sycamore stuns Amelia on shot at the buzzer

        John Purdom scored 15 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, including the winning shot at the buzzer, giving Sycamore the 52-50 upset over No. 2-seeded Amelia in Division I sectional play at UC's Shoemaker Center.

        The Aviators trailed 39-26 after three quarter but went into a full-court press to change the momentum.

        Sycamore plays Withrow for the sectional championship on Saturday at 1 p.m.

        • Withrow 72, Loveland 61, Division I sectional at UC's Shoemaker Center — Brandon Hunter scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, rallying Withrow to a victory.

        Trailing 29-26 at halftime, B.T. Sherman and P.J. sanders got Withrow on track in the third quarter with six points apiece with Hunter taking over in the fourth.

        Withrow plays Sycamore for the sectional championship on Saturday.

        • Hamilton 61, Middletown 50, Division I boys sectional at Wright State University — Hamilton avenged a regular-season loss to Middletown, handing the No. 4 seeded Middies a loss.

        Senior guard Derek Benson scored 16 points, eight during a 12-0 run, to lead the Big Blue.

        Hamilton meets Fairfield on Friday for the sectional championship, with the winner advancing to the Dayton district tournament.

        “Derek struggled the first half of the season but is now playing well,” Hamilton coach Larry Allen said. “The defense also picked up in the second half.”

        Trailing 43-41, Hamilton scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter for a 49-43 lead they didn't relinquish.

        “It wasn't so much what we told the kids at the break,” Allen said. “We missed easy shots and they hit everything. But they had to work for their shots and we knew sooner or later they would miss.”

        Allen praised the rebounding by Andy Mignery and the six assists by Tyler Kuhlman.

        Fairfield beat Hamilton 51-48 at Hamilton during the regular season.

        • Fairfield 57, Lebanon 54 (OT), Wright State Division I at Wright State — Fairfield pulled the second upset of the night at Wright State's Nutter Center, defeating No. 6 seed Lebanon.

        Pat Compton sank a three-pointer with 1:43 remaining in overtime to give Fairfield the lead for good. Adam Klotzbach sent the game into overtime with a three-pointer with 3.6 seconds remaining.

        Alter meets Franklin for the sectional championship Saturday at 4 p.m.

        • Franklin 58, Chaminade-Julienne 51, Dayton Division II sectional at UD Arena — Justin Evans sank three free throws in the final 41 seconds to ice the game.

        Chaminade cut Franklin's lead to 54-51 with 41 seconds remaining, but the Wildcats scored the final four points.

        Senior center Matt Jacobs led Franklin with 20 points and Jacobs had 19, including four three-pointers.

        • Springboro 64, Bellbrook 44, Dayton Division II sectional at UD Arena — Springboro, the top seed, made five first half three-pointers en route to a 25-13 lead.

        Seth Doliboa, Chip James, Luke Howard and Corey Sullivan each hit a pair of three-pointers to lead Springboro to the sectional championship game. Last season, Springboro was defeated in the first round by Dayton Dunbar.

        The Panthers will face Kings at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at UD Arena for the sectional title.

        • Cincinnati Country Day 81, Middletown Christian 48, Division IV sectional at Loveland — Brian McPhie scored 10 first-quarter points to lead CCD to a 23-12 lead. The Indians used a suffocating press in the first half to limit Middletown Christian to 21 points.

        McPhie paced the Indians with 19 points and Noah Allen added 16.

        • Fayetteville 84, Summit 83 (OT), Division IV at Loveland — Dan Tarter made a three-pointer and three free throws in overtime to lead Fayetteville past No. 3 seed Summit.

        Tarter made a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to give Fayetteville the lead for good. Summit missed two shots in the final 10 seconds.

        At one point Fayetteville trailed 30-9. C.J. Holden scored 31 and Adam Brady added 22, including six three's, to bring Fayetteville back.
