KENTUCKY SWIMMING

CovCath's Knueven grabs three more state titles

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Covington Catholic senior Brad Knueven set state records and met All-America standards in two individual events Saturday at the state swimming and diving championships at the University of Kentucky's Lan caster Aquatic Center.

Knueven won the 200-yard individual medley (1:49.26) and the 100 breaststroke (55.93), and he was a member of the Colonels' winning 400 freestyle relay team.

Saturday's three state titles brings Knueven's career total to seven.

“It's gratifying for all the work I've put in over the years to have something to show for it,” said Knueven, the meet's outstanding male performer.

Dixie Heights senior McKenze Murphy won her second straight 1-meter diving championship, defeating Holmes senior Katie Collins, 434.80-385.20. Scott junior Andy Seitz won the 200 freestyle. Beechwood junior Tim Wera won the 500 freestyle. CovCath coach Steve Durkee was named Coach of the Year.

Louisville St. Xavier won its 11th straight boys team title with 349 points. CovCath was second with 227, and Scott was third with 157.

Louisville Sacred Heart won its fifth straight girls team crown. Notre Dame finished fifth with 142.

Knueven said Saturday's 200 IM win over Jordie Proffitt of Henderson County was special because it erased the bitter memory of losing to Proffitt a year ago.

“It's been on my mind since the '98 state meet,” Knueven said. “It feels great to accomplish something that I've focused on for such a long time.”

Saturday, Proffitt led Knueven by about a half-second after the butterfly leg and nearly a second after the backstroke.

But then came the breaststroke, and Proffitt was nearly two seconds behind with only the freestyle leg remaining.

“I knew I'd go into the last half of the race behind,” Knueven said. “The breaststroke is where I catch up with people sometimes.”

As Murphy stood on the awards stand, she laughed when she heard Knueven yell “McKenze's awesome!” After Murphy received her gold medal, she hugged Knueven, her childhood friend.

“Brad and I go way back,” Murphy said. “Our moms went to Villa Madonna. We grew up together.”

Murphy's win over Collins was a lot tougher than expected. Murphy led by just 25 points going into Saturday's final three dives.

“Overall, the scores were lower (than last year's),” Murphy said.

Collins, who said she would attend Louisville next year, said her second dive, a back flip with 21/2 somersaults and a twist, was her biggest problem.

“Besides that, I did my dives the best I could,” she said.

As Seitz prayed before the 200 final, he thought of his father, Tom Seitz, who died of cancer in October. He said he dedicated his season to his father's memory.

“Even if it was good or bad, he would have said it was a great swim,” Seitz said.

To swim the 200, Seitz gave up the 100 backstroke, which he won last year.

Wera said he lost the 200 in the final 25 yards because he didn't have his finishing kick, but in the 500 final he led Seitz by less than a second until pulling away for good with 50 yards to go.

“I knew he was going to go out fast,” Wera said. “I just had confidence in my training. I wanted to stay on his hip.”

In the boys 1-meter diving, Dixie Heights freshman Mark Shattuck finished second with 425.90.

Regional champion Zach Niehaus of Scott finished sixth with 367.75.
