Police: Man dodged 5 shots

Officer injured; driver arrested following chase

BY TANYA BRICKING
The Cincinnati Enquirer

For the first time in 1999, Cincinnati police fired shots at a suspect. The man allegedly rammed his car into two police cars and hit an officer late Monday.

Damon Gatewood dodged at least five shots, and police say he drove away and led them on a brief chase before he was arrested on the Sixth Street viaduct downtown.

What began as a drug investigation turned into gunfire about 10:30 p.m. after officers pulled over Mr. Gatewood, 23, an unemployed South Cumminsville man who was driving an Audi with temporary tags.

Sgt. Mike Fern and Officer Dwayne Wilson, one in a marked cruiser and the other in an unmarked car, blocked the Audi at the dead end of Ring Place in Price Hill.

The officers got out of their cars, and Mr. Gatewood began to ram his car back and forth, hitting both police cars, police said. Sgt. Fern was knocked to the ground by the car, injuring his shoulder.

Police charged Mr. Gatewood with felonious assault on a police officer, felony fleeing and eluding, vandalism, criminal damaging and traffic violations. Officers said they recovered about 2 ounces of marijuana Mr. Gatewood allegedly threw from the car.

Mr. Gatewood's criminal history includes convictions for drug trafficking and drug abuse. He is being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center and is to be arraigned today in municipal court.
